A Tour of Jewish Carlton

Subject to a sufficient level of interest, I am planning to organise a tour of Jewish Carlton on Sunday, 28 October 2007.

The tour will be by bus, commencing at approximately 10am and concluding by early to mid-afternoon.

Although some of the buildings no longer exist, it is hoped either to visit or pass by the following places of interest:

• Historical plaques at the Melbourne Chevra Kadisha in Inkerman Street, and which were initially located in Carlton;
• Beth David Shule;
• Chevra Kadisha;
• Drummond Street row of terrace houses, owned by Woolf Davis, and which included a Mikvah, a Succah and a Shule;
• Chevra Torah Shule and Talmud Torah of Rabbi Abraham Eber Hirschowitz in Madeline (Swanston) Street;
• Chassidic Shtiebel;
• Hascolah Talmud Torah;
• Carlton Shule;
• Machzike Hadath Minyan;
• Mikvah at the Melbourne City Baths;
• Jewish commercial district;
• Home of Rabbi Joseph Lippman Gurewicz; and,
• East Melbourne Shule.

The tour will be conducted by Rabbi Shimon Opman and valuable insights and reminiscences will be provided by Mr David Stone.

The cost will be approximately $40 per person, and which will include a light lunch.

Any men who wish to participate ought register their interest with me by no later than Sunday, 2 September.
