This is an audio file of the Rav telling the story of how the Tanya (Rabbi Shneiur Zalman of Liady) and the Berditchever (Rabbi Levi Yitzchak of Berditchev) tried to meet with the Vilna Gaon, but did not succeed. This is a famous story in Chassidic and non-chassidic circles alike.
The Vilna Gaon was the leading authority of Lithuanian Jewry and arguably the most brilliant rabbinical authority of his era. The two visitors were likewise leading authorities and the Tanya was certainly an intellectual titan in the same class as the Vilna Gaon. If they HAD met ......
The Rav's comments on the veracity of the story as told are interesting, and his remarks on Chabad Chasiddut are very positive. You can also download an MP3 File (12Mb) of the Rav's words.
The audio is difficult to hear in places. Headphones help.
Here is a Link to a pdf of half of Rav JB Soloveitchik's Saturday night Shiurim
